In a well-known parable from the Buddhist tradition, the Buddha compares the inevitable pain we experience in life to being pierced by an arrow we cannot dodge. When we react to pain in ways that cause further harm, it is as if we shoot ourselves with a second arrow. So the question is, when we are pierced by life, how can we avoid shooting ourselves a second or third time?
