Our UUSM community thrives on volunteer participation! With only a small paid staff, UU San Mateo is able to accomplish SO much – both within and outside our walls – only because our members generously volunteer their time and talent in many useful and creative ways. There is something for everyone to do here at UUSM!

This page offers some ideas, but if you need assistance in finding the right place to find the YOU in UU, our dedicated Connections Coordinator Connie Spearing will be happy to provide personalized assistance. Just check in at the Welcome Table in the Benner Room on Sunday morning, or send an email to the Connections Coordinator.

Sunday Morning Volunteering Opportunities

It takes a village to create and manage UUSM’s Sunday-morning worship services. Our Sunday-morning volunteers help make UUSM a warm, inviting, spiritual home. In addition to Worship Associates, there are a variety of volunteer jobs that must be filled, each and every Sunday:

  • Greeter Volunteers welcome service attendees, especially new visitors
  • Usher Volunteers guide service participants to their seats, perform an attendance tally, and collect and count donations made during the Offertory.
  • Snack Volunteers bring healthy snacks for our post-service Coffee Hour.
  • Flowers/Aesthetics Volunteers arrange flowers and other decorations to make the Sanctuary beautiful for the service.
  • Parking Helpers put out and collect parking cones each Sunday morning to reserve emergency spots for the dentists, who kindly allow us to use their parking lot down the street.

This is your opportunity! Just click Sign-up Genius and choose your dates for all Sunday volunteering except Parking Helpers, for which you can sign up here.

For questions about Sunday-morning volunteering opportunities, send an email to the Sunday Service Volunteer Coordinator.

Leadership Development Committee Opportunities

Our Leadership Development Committee is responsible for helping to locate and encourage leadership within our community, for both UUSM’s governing Board of Trustees and various congregational committee and project-leadership positions.

Each spring, Leadership Development puts together a slate of officers and trustees who, once approved by vote of the congregation, will serve on our Board of Trustees for the following congregational year. Every trustee serves as a liaison to one or more functional area within the life of our congregation, such as Religious Exploration, the Facilities Committee, or the Campus Development Task Force. Trustees prepare for the Board’s monthly meetings by bringing an update from the committee(s) to which they are assigned. Serving as a trustee is a great way to help guide the focus of policy for the UUSM’s many good works. After one year of service, some trustees are ready to hold officer positions in the following year.

Additionally, the Leadership Development Committee is always seeking people who have the time and talent to lead various projects, such as Hanging of the Greens and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration; and to serve on various committees, such as Finance as well as the Leadership Development Committee itself.

If you are looking to be connected with just-the-right leadership opportunity, send an email to the Leadership Development Committee.
